Dear Parents/Caregivers,
I`d like to welcome you to our Shona and Ndebele school and look forward to working with you and your child during 2009. The school board has managed to secure two magnificent sites for our Shona and Ndebele lessons, at Catherine Mcauley School in Craigmore Adel North and Payneham Community Hall. I thank VaMutusva and VaMashonganyika for their efforts in negotiating with the administrators at these sites on our behalf. Another site will be opened in Seaton shortly.

Lessons will start officially at these sites on 28 Feb 2009. Therefore, it is important to enroll your child on or before the above date, forms are available from Cuthbert Mashonanyika and Sherpard Mutusva .
Shortly, a Parent meeting at each site will be called to outline the expectations and program for this year.
With kind regards,
Jack Mafara ( coordinator)

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

We have now come to the end of our school year 2008. This term we experienced a few hiccups due to develops taking place. I am sure you are all aware that at the beginning of term 4 the School Board came up with a proposal to run 3 or 4 campuses. This was meant to reduce distances students had to travel and enable each area to come up with the most convenient location and time for lessons. School in new sites was expected to start second week of term 4, but this was not possible because some sites experienced difficulty securing a site in their areas.

On a positive note a school has been established in   North Adelaide at Cathrine Catholic McAnley School. We thank Mr Mutusva for negotiating with the school admin at Cathrine Catholic McAnley School. We also sensially thank the Principal of this school for offering us a classroom to do our lessons.

Despite issues experienced this term, we would like to recognise and reward the effort made by all students who attended Shona Ndebele lessons this year. Certificates of attendence shall be presented to the recipients on 20th December 2008 at the Chrismas Party.

I wish to thank everyone for their contribution towards the smooth running of our school.

Last but not least, I would like to wish you all a safe and festive Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Best Regards,
Jack Mafara

TEXT BOOKS
For those who indicated that they want to buy books similar to the samples that I bought and showed some of you, I was advised last week by my brother that they have gone up as below,   as a guide:
Shona Dictionary was Z$960m   now Z$5bn those in the range of Z$160m are now over Z$2bn, this is as of last week. You can still get in touch with suppliers in Zim, am sure they can mail you the books, but if you still want my brother to assist then let me know, so that logistics can be arranged in advance. It involves running up and down since books like anything else is in short supply. He does not have time, but is willing to help.

THE FIRST SHONA/NDEBELE SCHOOL IN AUSTRALIA

After informal consultations with some members of SAZA, there was a general consensus that there is need to start a Shona/Ndebele school in Adelaide. We maybe the first Zimbabwean association in the world to set up such a formal training of two major Zimbabwe languages. In our view as SAZA Executive we feel this project to be a noble idea for our kids now and future generations. Preparatory work is going on now, and we need to submit our request to start the school as soon as possible, so that we are in time for deadline in March. Below is a summary of what has been done and what needs to be done:

What has been done:
The Chairman and Youth Coordinator attended a meeting with an education Official on 7 February 2008 at Min of Education HQ.
Legal requirements and how to set up the school were discussed, and also we were informed of the assistance we can get.
We were given lots of forms that need to be filled.

What needs to be done:
1. To register all the prospective students (registration books we were given)
2. To get all details about prospective teachers so that they can get police clearance, and be registered for a short training course.
3. To set up a Board of Directors for the school (made up of teachers', students' and parents representatives)
4. To identify a government school where we can negotiate to base the school. (Possibly a central location).Assistance of $26 /student/year will be given direct to the school to assist them in cleaning. (Funding seemed to be available but we need to act very fast.)
5. To register the school with the education board; they need a minimum of 10 students aged between 4 and about 18 years. (those below and above the age limits can attend the school, but they will not be considered for government funding)
6. To pay for students insurance/student (this money is refundable when the grant is approved.

WE HOPE WE WILL ALL BE EXCITED TO SET UP THE FIRST SHONA/NDEBELE SCHOOL IN AUSTRALIA, IF NOT IN THE WORLD OUTSIDE BORDERS OF ZIMBABWE.

To enable us to proceed, we invite all interested to be students, teachers (even if you are
not teachers by profession, training will be provided) and School Board members to sent a message to sazimbabwe@yahoo.com. More information will be provided soon after we establish the size of the class.

Please provide following details requested for the would be student and the language of interest (between 4 and about 18 years):

Surname:
Firstname{
Contact phone number:
Date of birth:
Shona:
Ndebele:

Your immediate response and also spread of this message by word of mouth is highly appreciated.

Thank you

SAZA Executive
